I'm going somewhere... FINALLY!

Like the title, I'm going somewhere... FINALLY! My parents decided to go somewhere during this holiday finally. We decided to go to Bali! I've been to Bali once with my family, and it was a really good and convenient place that everyone would enjoy. For this holiday to Bali, I am going there with my dad, mom, younger brother, baby brother, his maid, me, and 4 of my dad's friends. It's going to be awesome there and I'm going to enjoy there every night. I'm going to Bali tomorrow (New Year's Day) and coming back on the 4th of January. So it means that I'm going to sleep there 3 nights. We ordered a villa (I think) and I'm sure we're having some great food. I'm really excited of going to Bali tomorrow morning. We leave home at 6:30 in the morning and return at 4:00 afternoon on the 4th of January. I'm going to be blog posting about me staying at Bali everyday (1st of January, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. GO BALI!!!

The Story of the World 2 - The Middle Ages

Susan Wise Bauer
*****

After I finished reading 'I know what you did last summer', I decided to take a break on English books. As a result, I decided to read a history book called 'The Story of the World 2' by Susan Wise Bauer in Korean. There are 5 of these books. No. 1 is the Ancient Times, No. 2 is the Middle Age, No. 3 is right before modern times, No. 4 is Modern (1), and No. 5 is Modern (2). This is a 580 page book and it is really long and it took me 6 days to finish this. This book is hard to tell about this story so in this blog post, I will tell you about this author and also about my favourite part of this book.

This book is written by an author called Susan Wise Bauer. She is a mom of a child, and she doesn't like her child studying in school so she decided to teach her child history herself. As a result, she made a book about history and this is the one. This book is the easiest history book you could ever find because she wrote this book for a little child. This book was very successfully made, so this book was published, and when I read it, I got into it even though I don't like history books that much. Even though it is a very long book, it tells every little thing that happened in world history very clearly that everyone could understand easily.

'Story of the World 2' starts from the early Middle Age part and ends at the last part of the Middle Age. This book starts with Rome collapsing and getting attacked, it moves to the starting of Britain, moves the the Byzantine Empire, goes to India, Islam, and then moves to the story of Arabian Night. Then, the history is focused on China, Korea, Japan and goes down to Australia. It moves to Europe, France, Spain, Portugal and England again. When the book was almost finished, America starts appearing; about Christopher Colombus, Amerigo Vesepucci, and Ferdinand Magellan. King Martin Luther appears, and it ends with Queen Elizabeth and William Shakespear.

My favourite part of this book is the beggining of this book when Britain appears. In that chapter, it tells the story about Beowolf, and I can bet you know about it. Here is how it goes. The king made a nice place for his servants to sleep and rest. Fire up above the ceiling protected them from fear and nothing bad was happening. One day, a big monster (bigger than two trees combined together) attacked that place and ate a lot of men every night. This monster was so tall that the tallest man only reached to his knee. The King's knights and fighters couldn't handle this problem. A man named Beowolf came to the rescue and said that he wants to fight the monster. When the monster came, he threw away his own armor and swords. He wanted to fight with bare hands. Suddenly, Beowolf stood up and held the monsters' arm. He twisted the monsters arm harder and harder. Then at last, when he twisted so hard, his arm broke and came out. The monster got out of the castle and ran away for his life. I think this story is really good and I read this part over and over.

I think it is a really good book that teaches us history. I learned a lot about this book. Even though I knew some parts of this book already, I learnt more about it clearly. I would give this book 5 stars out of 5 and I recommend this book to everyone. Susan Wise Bauer is a really good author.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

During this winter break, I have read two books and they are all awesome. The first one is 'The Terrorist', which I told you about in my blog post. This book 'I know what you did last summer' is also one of them, and this book is better than 'The Terrorist'. It is a really good book Mrs. Hodgeson the librarian recommended. I thought this book would be out in the library, but when I looked for it, there was... luckily.

This book is about five teenagers; Julie, Helen, Barry, Ray and Collie. There is another teenager called Bud, but he doesn't appear a lot during this book... except for at the last part. Julie used to go out with Ray and broke up so she is going out with Bud. Barry and Helen are going out together, and Helen likes Bud really much. They are all good friends. On one morning, Julie got a note called 'I know what you did last summer' and Ray got a email which said the same thing. One day, when Barry was driving with Julie, Helen, and Ray, they killed a little young boy called Davy by a car accident. Ray called a police and reported it. They were all scared that they would get caught so they just went to their house and left the killed boy with no supervision. Helen meets a boy called Collie and realized that he was a nice kind boy.

It was just a normal night. Barry was in front of the stadium. There was a bright light in front of him, and after a few seconds, there was a gunshot, and Barry got a bad injury in his spine. He was moved to the hospital and had to stay there for a long time. Helen was absolutely shocked, and she sent flowers to her. Julie also was shocked so she sent a bunch of yellow roses. Julie and Ray tried to find out the connection of Barry's shot, the note, and the little kid's death. They thought that one of Davy's family wanted to seek revenge and shot Barry. They were keep wondering Barry's shooter and tried to discover about all of this. While Barry was in the hospital, Ray visited him and asked about this shooting thing. He said that it was just a robbery because his 50$ was gone after he got shot. Ray was relieved by this news and told everyone else. Everyone was relieved.

One day, when Helen came back to her house after she swam, she realized that Collie was sitting on her purple chair. He said that he was the one who shot Barry, sent those letters and did all those bad things. He said that Davy was his half brother so he wanted to do revenge and kill Barry, Ray, Julie, and Helen. Helen was scared so she wanted to jump out of the window but Collie blocked her. She went to the bathroom and locked the door. She was very scared so she just jumped out of the bathroom window.

After a few hours, Julie had a date with Bud at the evening. When Bud came to her house, Bud made Julie come to the car and he wanted to talk to her. He then said that he was Collie and he disguised himself as Bud as well. He said that he pretended to be two person at the same time. He also said that he was Davy's brother and he also wanted to do revenge. He even knew that Julie sent flowers to Barry. Julie was scared. She knew that Bud would kill her. After a while, Ray came to help Julie. Bud was gone and he said that Bud attacked her for no reason. This book ends while Julie talks to Ray and hugs each other.

Another Fallen Teeth

Well, there was another one. About one month ago, I posted about my fallen teeth... and it happened last week. My back teeth started shaking since 1 month ago (a looooong time) and I could've took it off, but I was scared to. Like I said, I don't like taking my teeth off because it hurts. This is how my story about the 'fallen teeth'.

Well, I invited Young Woo to my house and started playing this Korean game called 'Crazy Arcade'. Suddenly, my mom came in and gave a spicy Korean food called Tteok Bokk Ki (Weird name). We were eating it and playing games at the same time. I was eating it, and suddenly, I chewed something hard that wasn't like Tteok Bokk Ki. When I took that hard thing off, I realized it was my fallen teeth. My mouth was filled with blood and there were a lot of blood, but fortuitously, it didn't hurt AT ALL! I was relieved and I was happy because when I still had my shaking teeth, it hurt a lot when I was chewing other food. It bothered me, and I wanted to take it off, but i was scared to. I went to the bathroom then and washed my mouth. It was my second back teeth that fell off. I don't have any shaking teeth now, but when that happens, I will let the teeth fall off automatically. Then, I started playing with Young Woo 'Crazy Arcade' again for 1 hour!!!

P.S.: Young Woo and I are both good in Crazy Arcade.. but he's a little better. =)

Avatar

Yesterday afternoon, I had nothing to do except for staying at home, doing nothing. Then, my mom said "Si Won! Do you want to watch the movie Avatar?" I said, "YES MOM!" I headed to the movie theater in PIM with my little sister. It was the 2:45 time and we just got in time. This movie is a science fiction movie which can be in 3D. I thought watching in 3D would be dizzy so I just watched the normal one. Avatar is not the Avatar cartoon that u can watch in Disney Channel... it's a movie. (You can realize this on the pic)

Avatar is about a main character named Jake Sully. He meets a lady called Grace, and became friends. When they go in the container kind of place, you turn into a monster (in the pic left side). This monster is tall and strong. One day, when Jake Sully became a monster by going in the container, he hunted by himself and got chased by a huge monster which is a different kind as him. He got saved by another monster looking similar as him but a different kind. It was a female, and she took him to her family. The family had over 300 people. Jake Sully learned how to become their kind and learned their language, how they act, and got a dragon looking huge bird. One day, the real human came to destroy their world and destroyed their enormous tree with a missile. Jake Sully and the others decided to do revenge so they had a huge war. They had over 500 dragon looking birds and over 500 horses, and also men. The human had a explosive bomb and lots of tanks, airplanes, missiles, rocket launcher... etc. They fought, and after a long fight, Jake Sully's team won. However, the boss of the human was still alive, and fought Jake Sully and his girlfriend. When the boss was about to kill Jake with a knife, his girlfriend shot two arrows on his chest and he died.

This was a great movie with lots of action. I loved watching it but it was a long movie which was 2 hours and 35 minutes. Before I watched it, I was disappointed because I thought it was the cartoon Avatar, but it wasn't. My sister says it was one of the best movies she has ever watched. I love this movie, but it isn't the best movie I ever watched.

It's CHRISTMAS!!!

The day that everyone waited... CHRISTMAS!!! It's finally Christmas today!!! On Decemeber 25! Most people celebrate on Christmas. They go to relatives' house, play with their friends, go Christmas shopping, and do a lot of things. Well, I don't. Even though it's the December holiday, I don't go anywhere... (Even though I might go to Bali), don't go Christmas shopping, and DONT EVEN GET PRESENTS!! I don't know what to get for Christmas. My mom already bought me a Kipling Bag about 2 weeks ago, but I don't count that as a Christmas present. However, if I know what to get and I ask my parents to buy them, they 'might'.

Some people believe in Santa Claus and some people don't. In my case, I believed Santa Claus last year, but I don't anymore. I did a test if Santa gives us presents on Christmas last year. I was in Malaysia with my friends then. When I was sleeping and my friend on the other bed, he woke me up and said 'Lets see if Santa Claus is our parents and lets stay up until they come.' My friend's mom went up for shopping and didn't come back until 3. Suddenly, his mom opened the door so we rushed back to our room. She brought a shopping bag so we thought that it was our presents. When my friend's mom went to her room, we sneaked up to the shopping bag and looked. It was... my friends baby sister's present!!! Next morning, we realized that Santa Claus is not real.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!! AND ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY!!!

Gukgadaepyo

Yesterday night, after I came back home from a Korean restaurant called Chunggiwa, my dad decided to watch a Korean movie called Gukgadaepyo. My dad already watched it but he said it was a great movie so he wanted to watch again. My mom, my sister and I haven't watched it before but I heard that it is a good movie.

It is about a man (the guy that is in the middle in the pic) that lost (but didn't pass away) his mom. He wanted to find his mom so he wanted to be famous by being a Korean Ski player in the National Team. When he went to his first training, he met a coach, and 4 other teammates. In the picture, the one who is in the most left is a Middle Schooler, and he was a bit mental, but in ski, there was no age limit, so he decided to be a ski player, but only if someone gets injured in his team. After over 1 year of training, they still slipped and weren't good enough, but they trained every night and day so they became better. They had to participate in the ski World Cup and be in at least 6th place out of 8 to go in the Olympic in Japan. The day before the World Cup, all the ski players met each other. The Korean national team and the American national team fought by punching and kicking. The referees decided to not let Koreans play in the World Cup so they were disqualified. They just watched the other players ski in the TV. Suddenly, there was a bad fog and lots and lots of snow. The World Cup got cancelled so the referees decided to make all teams qualify and go in the Olympic!!! In the ski Olympic, they had two trials. Korea had to go last and this was the first time Korea participated in the ski World Cup. In the first trial, the first person got 130 m so Korea jumped up to 3rd place, where you could get a bronze medal. The second person slipped so they went back to 11th place out of 13. The third person got 128 m so they went up to 6th place. The last person did a good job so they jumped up to 3rd place again. After a rest, there was the second trial. The first person got 136 m so they stayed at 3rd place. The second and third person also did good but the other countries were even better so they went back down to 5th. The last person got injured in the first trial so the mental Middle Schooler had to replace him. He did a good job! He went soooo far but... he FELL! Other people gasped but still cheered for him. Korea went to 13th (last) place and the tournament ended.

I thought this was one of the best movies I've ever seen and the ski players jumping was really cool. I hope I could do that sometime and I really really loved it. YAY!!!! What a GREAT holiday!

The Terrorist

Caroline B. Cooney
*****

I recently finished a book called The Terrorist by Caroline B. Cooney. She is a really good author, and a few days ago, Mrs. Hodgeson came to our class and introduced this new author to us. When we went to the library, there was a green bucket which contained Caroline B. Cooney books and also Lois Duncan books. It was swarming near the green bucket, so I just reached my arm and picked up a book. LUCKILY, I chose The Terrorist. My four choices were The face in the Milk Carton, I know what you did last summer, Stranger with two faces, and The Terrorist, and I actually picked up the one I really wanted to read! And of course, it turned out to be good.

This book is about a girl named Laura and her younger brother, Billy. When Billy and his two friends got out of the train and got to Baker Street, they decided to do a race and see who gets out to the fresh air first. It was five pence for the winner. Passengers were all crowding (swarming) to the train, so his friends were way ahead. When Billy was running, there was a man who stopped him. He smiled, and gave a package to him and said that his friends dropped this. He knew it was a bomb after he got it, and he didn't want to throw it at the crowd, so he just let it explode in his hands. Unfortunately, Billy got killed by the bomb. His sister Laura, soon heard the news of Billy, and was shocked. This incident was in news, and newspapers. Everyone soon knew what happened. Laura went to a school called London International Academy (LIA) and had lots of friend there, like Mohammed, Con, Jimmy, Jehran and lots more. Laura thought she had to find Billy's killer, so he suspected everyone. Her neighbours, teachers at school, and even friends. She searched everywhere for clues, but it was no use. One day, Laura went to a slumber party at Jehran's. Everyone was there. Suddenly, Jehran asked Laura for Billy's passport. Jehran looked like Billy even though she was a girl. Jehran said that she is in danger, and have to flee this country, England. Jehran wanted to flee to America, but when she gets Billy's passport, she would only be 11, so she couldn't go to America alone. She needed a person older than 15 to go with her. Laura was older than 15, so Jehran decided to go with Laura. Laura pretended to go to a place called Edinburgh with Jehran, and lied to her parents. When Jehran and Laura reached the airport. They bought two tickets. One for Laura and one for Jehran. The Passport Control man looked at Jehran's passport (which was actually Billy's) and believed that it was Billy, not Jehran. Suddenly, Laura decided to turn back and go home. She didn't want to go to another country just because Jehran's life was in danger. When she told that to her, Jehran said that she went through weeks of planning just to go out of England. Confusion filled Laura's brain. What Jehran said meant that Jehran killed Billy just to get Billy's passport to flee this country! Laura understood it. All the soldiers in Jehran's house was a terrorist, helping her. Jehran started threatening Laura. She said that she doesn't want to die the way Billy did. Laura knew that Jehran was a terrorist and she called the Airport Security. Then, Jehran started plan B, which was to run away. Mr. Evans came to Laura to help her and calm her down. Laura told all her friends and returned home.

Go MERAPI!!!

Thursday was MADNESS DAY!!! It was an awesome day... one of the best days of this school year. In Madness day, there were 6 volcanos; Merapi, Bromo, Agung, Krakatau, Salak and Rinjani. I was in Merapi, which wore the green color. Each person had to participate in 2 activities, and I got chosen in volleyball and big ball soccer.

The first session was volleyball, which was a really fun sport. Merapi first played Bromo, which was not a easy match. They had a really tall and good Korean player, who was at least 20 cm taller than me. We were winning really bad until... the Korean guy served. He made 7 serves in a row, and they overtook us, and they won 16: 14, after going in deuce. We lost our first match so I was disappointed. Next match was Salak. They weren't really good, so we won by about 8. We also won by 5 the next match, which were Rinjani. The last match, we faced Krakatau. We lost 15: 11. They were soooo good, and they came in 2nd place. We came in 4th place, Bromo came 1st, and I'm not sure about Salak and Agung.

After the 15 minute break, I had big ball soccer. This was better than the volleyball, because soccer is my favourite sport. We used the BIG BALL for the soccer ball, and it was really difficult to kick!!! Lots of people fell down, and when I faced Bromo, I got hit with the enormous ball two times in a row. It really hurt. We tied all our games 0:0 so I was disappointed. I almost scored at the first match, because when I scored, the finish whistle blowed 2 seconds ago. Krakatau came first, and we came 4th (I think).

After another break, we headed down to the New Gym, to watch the Student v.s. Teacher basketball game. For the 6th grade, the students won. For the 7th and 8th grade, the students won again!!! I thought this would never happen... but it did! I hope I participated in this, but I forgot to sign up. Then, Mr. Boots told us who won the Madness Cup. "Come on Merapi... Come on!!!" I thought. Well, THAT NEVER HAPPENED.

This is the list...
1. Agung
2. Krakatau
3. Bromo
4. Salak
5. Rinjani
6. MeRaPi!!!!!
We came LAST place. I knew this would happen, because we came 5th place at the Madness 1. Agung got the trophy, but we will definitely win the next Madness!!! Go MERAPI!!!!!!!!!

VPA Concert

The VPA concert was on December 15th. It was one of the biggest concert in the year, and it was really nervous when I performed, because I had to perform in front of all of my friends and teachers. Strings, movement, drama, choir, art and band performed in the VPA concert, but art is only a slideshow. I participate in the intermediate band, and today, we performed with the advanced band, which are all 8th graders. That made me more nervous, because if I play a note wrong, it's going to be bad. We performed at 1:00 - 2: 30, and we have another performance tonight, at 6:00 - 7:30. I play the clarinet in band, and I enjoy playing it, so I was excited while performing. For boys, we had to wear white top, black bottom, black socks, and black shoes. We also had to wear ties and belts, and also, shirts has to be tucked in and all the outfits has to be very formal. We performed in the Fine Arts Theater (FAT) and it is a really big stage, and it has a lot of audience to sit. See how nervous I was during this performance? Band played 4 songs: Trailblazers of the Spirit, Breckenridge Overture (only Intermediate band), Deck the Halls (only Advanced band), and Eagle's triumph. We might've not finish the Eagle's triumpth because the time might run off, but there was enough time. It is lucky that didn't happen because this was a really nice piece. During the concert, when a slow part changes to a fast part, the lights illuminated and changed the colour. Changing the light colour happened quite a few times during the performance, and I like this, because the performance was more exciting. Personally, I think performing in front of our friends and teachers was more nervous than performing in front of our parents. This was a really important performance, so I was really careful not to mess up notes. I was nervous AND excited during this performance.

Flood Buckets

December 9, 2009

Yesterday morning, we headed down to the Little Theater and heard a lady telling us about the victims of the flood. JIS decided to fill a bucket with items and later give it to the flood victims. As a result, all 6th graders had to make 5 buckets each in one day at lunch time. After Young Woo and I finished lunch, we went to the computer lab and checked our JIS e-mails. Some teachers told us to go to the Bali Stage and fill up the buckets. I THOUGHT it would be boring because it was just filling some items in side the bucket. When we reached the Bali Stage, we started putting items inside the bucket. At first, it was boring for me, and as I started the second bucket, I started to like filling the buckets. As I kept on doing this, I started to get fixated with this job. We had to get to the back of the queue and get items from the box and put it in the bucket. Those items were tiny buckets, kids and adult toothbrush, toothpaste, pink and blue towels, sponge, brush, mosquito repellent and some vitamins. At the end, we had to put the JIS sticker on the side of the big bucket and put it on the Mrs. Marello place. Bali Stage started to swarm more and more. As we finished our 4th bucket, the bell rung and we had to get to SSR. However, we still wanted to do it, so we finished our 5th bucket after the bell! There were still some students and teachers left so I decided to do just one more. I finished my 6th bucket and decided to go back to class. Young Woo wanted to do just ONE more so I agreed with him. As we got the 7th bucket, we thought it was too late, so we gave up and went back to class. One person had to do 5 each, but it was fun for me so I did 6. I think it was a good innovation and I was proud of myself when I finished 6 buckets.

Bill Gates

Ruth Strother
***

I recently finished reading a book called Bill Gates by Ruth Strother. I seldom read biography and I don't like them much but I wanted to read a variety of books so this time, I chose Bill Gates for my biography book.

Bill Gates was born in Seattle, Washington in 1955. When he entered Lakeside elementry school, he started loving computer, which was a very new thing for him. Bill Gates meets a friend he will have forever and his name was Paul Allen. They make a small company called Traf-O-Data and sells a scheduling system when he was 17, where he earned $4,200. On 1973, he finally enters the Harvard University. The day Bill Gates and his friend Paul Allen started Microsoft was at 1975. On February 3, 1977, the two people sign a partnership agreement to create the Microsoft company officially. However, Bill got 64% of the money they earned and Allen got only 36%. They soon hire some workers, secretaries, and all the people who help the company. They didn't really like this place, so they decided to move the company to Seattle. The Microsoft company started earning a lot of money and started to get very popular. Almost everyone in the house had one of Microsoft's computer. The amount of money they earned started to get bigger and bigger, and Bill Gates finally became the youngest self-made billionaire by 1987. After Windows 1.0 and 2.0, Microsoft creates Windows 3.0 at May 22, 1990, and it became really popular so that almost everyone started using it. In 1992, Bill Gates receives the National Medal of Technology from President George Bush. Bill Gates had two girlfriends, but his Microsoft work was very busy, so the two girl friends broke up with him because they were tired of waiting. However on January, 1, 1994, he marries one of his workers, Melinda French. Unfortunately at the same year, Bill Gate's mother passes away by breast cancer. Also at the same year, Bill Gates became the wealthiest person in America. Microsoft makes Windows 95 at 1995, and Windows 98 at 1998 (of course). After Bill Gates has done a lot of work on his Microsoft work, he decided to care about his family more and care less of his Microsoft work. His first daughter Jennifer is born on 1996, his son Rory is born in 1999, and his second daughter Phoebe is born in 2002. On June 15, 2006, Bill Gates announces that he will not work in Microsoft anymore b July 2008.

My favourite part of this book is when it talked about Bill Gates being a billionaire. Inside the book, it also shows the pictures of the 10 wealthiest person in the world. There were a lot of Chinese and Japanese. Out of lots of Asian people, it was hard for me to believe that Bill Gates became the richest person in the world by just a computer company. As we know, almost everyone in this school uses Microsoft Windows, and it is a really famous company. I think Microsoft is really good, because it also has Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Invitation and more. Bill Gates is still one of the richest person in the world.

I will give this book 3 stars out of 5 because I don't like biography that much.

Eragon

Christopher Paolini

*****

Recently, I've finished a book called Eragon by Christopher Paolini. A lot of my friends recommended it including Neil, Brandon, and Young Woo, and this book was in the recommended book list. Christopher Paolini wrote this book at the age of 15, and he became a professional writer in high school. This was his debut book and it was pretty good. This book is over a 700 pages so it took me a long~~~ time to read this.

This book is about a 15 year old boy named Eragon. One day, he found a dragon egg in a place called Spine. When a dragon hatched from it, he named it Saphira and it became bigger and bigger every day. He lived with his uncle Garrow and his brother Roran at the age of 17. The evil guy, Galbatorix kills Garrow and his brother Roran left his hometown to marry a girl. Eragon was left alone. As days pass, he becomes friends with a man called Brom, and they take adventures with Saphira. They went to a lot of places like Daret, Therinsford, Yazuac, and lots more. When Brom dies because of the Ra'zac, he meets a guy called Murtagh, who was similar to Brom. He also takes adventure with him and these adventure happen all the way through the book.

My favourite part of this book was when he fights all the bad guys such as the Urgals and Ra'zacs. Eragon learned magic from Brom and he uses these magic to the monsters but the magic is very dangerous so Eragon almost died a lot of times. He killed some Urgals, but the Ra'zacs were pretty strong. They were the one who killed Brom, who was like Eragon's father. Later on in the story, Eragon, Saphira and Murtagh meets the upgrade of the Urgals, the Kull. They are over 8 feet tall and very fat. They win in the fight, though. I really liked the part when Eragon fought all those monsters. My another favourite part of this story was when Eragon sparres with his masters, Brom and Murtagh. Brom was pretty easy to spar so Eragon kind of won, but Murtagh wasn't easy. For both Eragon and Murtagh, they couldn't have an adventage and they both said that they haven't sparred someone stronger than them.

I would give this book 5/5 stars. I would recommend this book to everyone of my friends.

Fallen Tooth

December 1st, 2009

I really don't like taking my teeth off and I think it hurts when that happens. About 1 month ago, my back teeth started shaking a little bit and this was the first time my back teeth started shaking. I was scared since then, because I didn't want to take my teeth off. There would be blood all over my mouth. One day, I was eating a nut. I chewed the nut with my shaking teeth accidentaly so it started hurting more and more, and it eventually shook a lot. It was almost going to fall off. As time passed, I started to get more scared and scared. It was last night when the teeth fell off. It was 11:00 p.m. I was still reading the book 'Eragon' and I wanted to have a break so my mom gave me a piece of bread. While I was chewing the bread with the unshaking teeth, I felt something hard inside my mouth. When i opened my mouth and took the hard thing off, I realized it was my teeth. Fortuitiously, it didn't hurt a lot. Acutally, I was going to tell my mom to take it off after I ate my bread but luckily, it came off without any pain. I went to the bathroom to wash my mouth and take all the blood out. There was a lot of blood but it didn't hurt so I could manage that. I also washed my fallen teeth for fun. Next morning, I showed it to my dad and he laughed because he thought it was funny that it came off while I was eating just a piece of bread.

GeoActive Questions (2)

Activities:

1. List the main reasons for water scarcity.

The main reasons for water scarcity is that many hot places such as deserts have very low
rainfall, variations in climate, land degradation, population growth and water pollution.
2. What is a drought? What type of hardships do you think that a drought could cause if you were living in a village in a poor country such as Ethiopia?

A drought is a period of below average precipitation. If I was living in a poor country such as
Ethiopia, the hardships I would face is fatal diseases such as cholera.
3. How does land degradation affect the supply of fresh water?

Land degradation can be caused by the excessive destruction of natural vegetation through
deforestation, overgrazing and farming. Then the soil would be not able to store water.
4. (a) What is El Nino?

El Nino is a warming that develops every three to five years in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of
Peru. During El Nino, the moist easterly trade winds that normally blow across the Pacific Ocean
reverse their direction.
(b) Why does El Nino often cause drought in Australia?

El Nino often cause drought in Australia because of the reversal of air pressure across the Pacific, resulting in high pressure systems building up over most of Australia.
5. Observe the map showing the global effects of El Nino in 1982-83.

(a) What effects does El Nino have on the availability of fresh water?

There can be period of heavy rain through the west coast of South America which would cause severe flooding. Water will be polluted and only a little bit of clean water is available.
(b) Name the countries and describe the problems that arose from decreased rainfall caused by El Nino.

Africa: Reduced corn crop in sub-Saharan region
China: Agricultural land under threat from drought in northern regions and flooding in southern regions
United States: Rainfall above normal in north-western states (double the historical averages)
Indonesia: High air pollution levels, following forest fires
Philippines: Lower rice harvest following drought
Colombia: Fishing operators affected by lower catch (down 20%)
Papua New Guinea: Drought-related failure of food crops, leading to famine conditions requiring food aid
Australia: Wheat exports threatened by drought conditions across grain-growing areas, particularly New South Wales
Peru: 1. Flooding (also in Chile) 2. Fishing operators affefcted by lower catch as anchovy and Pacific sardine move offshore to escape warm currents (5 degrees C above normal temperatures)

Bintaro Lama Field Trip

On November 12th, my homeroom classmates went to the Bintaro Lama field trip, where we learned some ways to clean water and some things about water. We went there because right now in school, we are learning about water. After 40 minutes of the bus ride, we went to our groups and headed inside the kampung. My group (Me, Yong Hee, Brandon) had to go to stations 6, 2 and 4. In this post, I will write about the three stations I went to.

The first station we went to was station 6, where we learned about disinfection. The kind guide there taught and explained to us two ways of cleaning water. The first way she showed us was using a thing called Aquatabs. If we just put 1 or 2 drops of Aquatab in the water, it could clean 30L of water. I think that was very cool, because just a few drops can clean a really big amount of water. They let the Aquatab dissolve, and it doesn't take long to finish this process. Aquatabs are a really efficient way of cleaning water. The seecond way of cleaning water was using a liquid called Air Ramat. You just put about 5ML of liquid inside the water, then you could clean one gallon of water! After putting Air Ramat, you have to shake it for 30 seconds to clean the water.

The next station we went was station 2, where we learned about hygiene. The guide there showed two posters. The first one they showed us was a poster showing how food gets contaminated. They told us that some people in the kampung don't wash their hands after pooing. The bacteria in the feces get on their hands and when they touch food and eat it afterwards, it is likely for them to get a stomachache. The second poster showed 5 ways of how to prevent them. One was washing your hands before touching babies, and one of the ways were also to make a toilet for them.

The last station we went was station 4, where we learned about flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration. First, they put a liquid called PUR in the water which cost RP 1,000. PUR makes the dirt particles stick together and form a floc. The dirt clump settle down to the bottom of the container which is a process called sedimentation. After that, they filter the water by putting in the claypot in the bucket. They cover the claypot's hole by laying a filter cloth. Then they pour the dirty water but the dirty garbage and things don't go past the cloth and stay there. I thought this whole process was very similar to the water treatment plant, but you put alum instead of PUR.

After visiting the Bintaro Lama field trip, I learned some new things about cleaning water. Before, when we visited the water treatment plant, I also learned cool things there but the Bintaro Kampung people taught and explained to us in a very kind way and a very understandable way. I thought the Kampung people were extremely kind to us... and there were some cute boys on the kampung!!!

Who Dun It?

Philip Pullman
***

Recently, I've finished a book called 'Who Dun It?'. This book is a detective and mystery story by the author Philip Pullman. I don't really like detective stories and I'm not used to reading these kinds of books but I decided to have a go on this book. This book was in the recommended book reading list and I actually think these recommended books are fun or interesting.

This book is a short story book, where there are lots of different stories in one book. In this book, there were 14 detective stories and I really liked 2 of them. Of course, the other 12 are still fun to read. This book also contains a 1 page mystery question page where we could solve them.

This is my favourite story in this book and it's called 'The One-handed Murderer'. There was a princess living in a castle. When nobody was in the princess's room except for herself, a murderer opened the castle window and tried to come in and kill her. When the princess shouted, the murderer ran away from the castle. Next day, the same thing happened to her. Once again, the murderer ran away when the princess shouted. However, the next day was different. The princess hid next to the window. When the murderer opened the window and put his hand forward, the princess put down the window so the murderer's hand got cut. One day, a young man wearing gloves wanted to meet the king of the castle. The king liked the young man so the princess and the young man had a marriage. When the princess and the man were on the carriage, the young man turned out to be the murderer and he threatened the princess. The princess escaped from the murderer and re-married a sailors son. After a long time, she got caught by the murderer again so he went to the princess's house so that he could kill the princess. When the murderer asked the princess to give him a towel before he killed the princess, she got her husbands pistol and wrapped it in the towel. The princess approached the man and shot him with the wrapped pistol.

I would give this book 3 stars out of 5 stars.

The cat ate my gymsuit

Paula Danziger
*****

During the weekends, I read a nice book called 'The cat ate my gymsuit' by Paula Danziger. It's not really a long book, so I just finished it in about 2 days. My friend Young Woo recommended it and this book was also in the recommended book list. It actually turned out to be a good book.

This book is about a High School girl called Marcy in a school life. She has some school friends like Nancy and others. She hated her father because he was always shouting at his little brother Stuart and her with no reason. He hated her school life because of the principal. However, this event changed her life. Marcy's class had a new teacher named Ms. Finney who was the nicest teacher she'd ever had. Everybody liked her but Mr. Stone, the principal hated her and also other teachers. Mr. Stone planned to fire Mrs. Finney because she didn't do the Pledge of Allegiance, she wore clothes differently, she taught students in a different way; not a traditional way. Because of that, Ms. Finney got suspended so Marcy spoke up in front of Mr. Stone and told him nothing was wrong with Ms. Finney. Marcy also got suspended because of this.

My favourite part of this book was when Marcy and his boyfriend, Joel went to Nancy's party and had a nice time there. Joel asked Marcy if she wanted beer so she said that she wanted to. After the party, Marcy admitted to Joel that she actually didn't like beer but she only drank because everybody else was drinking. She wanted to be like others, not special. What surprised me in this book was when Joel and Marcy went to the party, and I thought they would dance together but Joel said that he was a lousy dancer.

I really liked this book so I would give this book 5/5 stars.

Personal Narrative (The Fearful Elevator)

‘Buzz… Buzz…’ The elevator lights from above twinkled and went dead. It was all dark and very freaky. It felt like the darkest haunted house ever. I could hear wind sounds since it was absolutely silent. I could even hear my breath sounds! It felt like wind coming out from my mouth. At first I thought nothing was going on but as 2 minutes passed, I started getting horrified. I realized it was 8th floor because they still had an orange light on the number 8 key. I almost arrived at 10th floor where my house was. I sat at the edge of the elevator and was scared to death. No… No…

This is how it all happened. ‘Bye!’ I said to my piano teacher. She lived at the same apartment but at 1st floor so I had to go up 9 floors to reach my house at the 10th. ‘Oops…’ I forgot to check my mailbox so I went down to ground floor and checked it. I got the envelope and went in the elevator. I was really exhausted so I decided to sleep at home as soon as I got there. There was nobody else inside the elevator which was good because I could just sit down at the elevator and rest for about 10 seconds until I reach 10th floor. When I was going up, I didn’t know which floor it was and it was just peaceful until… ‘Wham!’ the elevator jittered. I was sure it wasn’t an earthquake because it wouldn’t jitter like this. Suddenly the elevator door opened and I looked down. The space below was vast and blank and I thought I was almost going to die. I went back and had no hope. Then, the light started twinkling.

I waited for 15 minutes. The light twinkled again and it was on! ‘Thank god!’ It was all OK and I was very pleased. The elevator door suddenly opened and I saw the front door of my house straight ahead. I was so exhausted so I slept in my house all day.

Water Treatment Plant

When we went to the water treatment plant last Thursday, we saw the 5 steps of making dirty water into clean water. You can see the difference of the dirty water and clean water clearly. Dirty water is kind of yellowish and smells disgusting, and the clean water is the color like just normal drinking water. Here are the steps of the water treatment.

As we walked up the road, my classmates and I saw a river which had the color, yellow. It looked disgusting because it had all these cans, bottles, and chip rappers and all the other used stuff. However, we have a solution to this. There are huge metal bars which stop the garbages to go in the water that would become cleaner. But these huge bars are for the big chunks of garbage. This is Step 1 - Where you take the garbage out of the water.

To see the next step, the lady who helped us led us down the stairs, where we saw a room. The information below is Step 2 - Aeration. We oxigenated and added minerals to the dirty water because we wanted to make the water a bit cleaner and to get oxygen aeration.

The 3rd step was coagulation - which was pretty interesting to me, since we saw the water already put in chemicals called alum which forms floc, where the dirt comes together and gets bigger. The floc was gross-looking because it looked like diarrhea and some classmates giggled. I think this step was really cool and important. If this step wasn't there, this water treatment thing would be no use.

The 4th step was called sedimentation - which is one of the most important steps. The big flocks change to small flocs because the surface is too heavy. These flocs get out of the water and go in the storage room. The water now is saturated.

The last step is a very important step and it is called filtration, and disinfection. The disinfectant kills the germs or bacterias so the water now is safe to drink. We go in the AC room (finally) and we test the water now. The yellow water is now turned into pure transparent water. The lady shows us how it changed from dirty water to clean water.

The water now that we use in our houses is the water where we got from this water treatment plant right here! And, maybe you are using the water from the water treatment plant right now! I think I learned a whole bunch of new stuff because of this field trip and it was a really useful experience and it was a nice field trip. I know, everybody was sweating (like Ms. Marello said) but it was totally worth it of going in this field trip. We watched the movie after this field trip and they gave us some posters. Changing from a dirty water into a clean water right in the water treatment plant... Isn't it cool?

4 graphics for water unit

Here are the 4 graphics for water unit:

1. Evaporation - The picture on the right is a diagram showing how evaporation works. Evaporation is a process where water molecules change from liquid into gas, because of its increased tempreture.

2. Condensation - The picture on the right is a diagram of condensation on a glass cup. Condensation is a process where water molecules change from gas to liquid; which is the opposite of evaporation. On the diagram, water droplets come on the surface of the glass cup, because the warm water vapor touched a cold surface.

3. Precipitation - The picture on the right is a diagram showing a precipitation occuring when the rain is falling down. Precipitation is any form of water that falls to earth.

4. Infiltration - The picture on the right is a diagram which shows the process of infiltration. Infiltration is the process by which water on the ground surface enters the soil.

Olive's Ocean

Olive's Ocean
Kevin Henkes
*****

I've finished reading a book called 'Olive's Ocean' by Kevin Henkes. I chose this book from the library because this book was recommended by my friend. It was at the 'Recommended books' section and it even won the Newbery Medal! I find myself into Newbery Medal books because I know that there was a good reason that it won the medal. The front cover of this book looks boring but Mrs. Hodgeson (the librarian) said it's not a good idea to choose a book by it's front cover.

The main character, Martha, got a letter from her friend Olive's mother. As she read through the letter, she felt very astonished because her classmate, Olive turned out to be dead by getting crashed by a car. She didn't know Olive that much and didn't talk to her but she regretted about it.
When the day finally came for summer vacation, Martha and her family went to her grandmother, Godbee's house to stay with her. Martha's big brother Vince, has friends by the last name of Manning very near Godbee's house. Martha started to get interested by one of the Manning boys called Jimmy and they had dinner together at the Manning's house. The more she spent time with Jimmy, she liked Jimmy more and more every time. However, when Jimmy kisses her and it was recording, Martha got very mad and she got even more mad when she kissed her for a bet. The whole thing changed: as time passed, she started disliking Jimmy and he started to like a younger boy called Tate.
One day, when Martha was at the beach with her little sister Lucy, she almost drowned at the river and saw Jimmy holding hands with another girl, giggling with each other. Martha remembered that Olive's favourite place to be was at the Pacific Ocean so she filled a bottle up with Pacific Ocean water and decided to give it to Olive's mother.
It was the day when Martha had to return home again. When she was just about to leave, Tate ran all the way from his house and gave a little bag to her. It included a video tape that Jimmy pictured Martha kissing him and a note. The note made Martha feel very happy because he admitted that he was the one who liked Martha.
Martha returned home and went to Olive's mother's house to give her the bottle but unluckily, her mother moved to another place.

After I read this book for over an hour, I felt very proud of myself that I had made a very good book choice and understood the book perfectly. I think this is a fascinating book and I know that the reader would like this book. The author also did a very nice job introducing new vocabulary and to my surprise, it had our class vocabulary words like 'vast, idly, overwhelming"and more.

I recommend this book to everyone and I'm sure they'll like it. I would give this book5 stars out of 5.

The boys start the war

The boys start the war
Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
****1/2

I have finished a book called 'The boys start the war' by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. It is a funny and a nice book because it is filled with pranks which I quite enjoy reading. This isn't in the 'suggested reading book and it didn't even win the Newbery Medal but my sister's 4th Grade Teacher recommended it and her friends recommended it too. Well, I thought it was just a unenjoyable book but I turned out to be mistaken.

This book started by the author introducing the four Hatford boys: Jake, Josh, Wally, and Peter-- and the three Malloy girls: Eddie, Beth, and Caroline. Jake and Josh are twins and are in sixth grade with Eddie and Beth is in fifth grade while Wally and Caroline are in fourth grade. Peter is in second grade. First, the Hatford boys does a prank by pouring dead stuff (fish, birds, and gross stuff). The Malloy girls takes revenge by Eddie and Beth decided to bury Caroline in the river and pretend that Caroline is dead. The Hatford boys were scared because they thought that the dead stuff killed her.

The pranks and high jinks(highjinks) continue through the book; like the Malloys scaring the Hatfords when the boy's parents were gone. The Hatfords tease the girls by stealing Caroline's unappropriate drawing of her teacher, Mrs. Applebaum.

My favourite part of the book was when the Hatford's going up to Beth's window by a ladder and scaring them by wearing a disgusting, monster mask. Beth was scared to death so she screamed like a lunatic. Eddie came to the rescue by catching the Hatford boys and taking their flashlight. It was also really funny when Caroline went up to the Hatford boy's house and notices a clothesline. Caroline stole one underwear which looked like one of the boy's underwear and turns out to be Mr. Hatford's underwear.

I would give 4 and a half stars out of 5.

Bud, not Buddy

I have finished a interesting book called 'Bud, not Buddy' by Christopher Paul Curtis. I have chosen this book because this book was at the 'Recommended Book' list in front of the Assignment book and {PLUS} it won the Newbery Medal. One of my friends read this book and also read another Newbery medal book by the same author called 'The Watsons go to Birmingham' and he loved the book. I think Newbery Medal books are fabulous and I find them very enjoyable.

The main character Bud, lived in an orphanage. One day, one of the caseworkers came in the orphange and arranged a foster home for him. He had to live with the boy named Todd Amos and his parents. His family treated him badly by hitting him and making him injured. He runs away from their house even though he was locked inside (by breaking out from the window). He meets a man who became his friend and his name was Lefty Lewis. He stayed with him for a few days and went off to a place called Grand Rapids to look for his father (Herman E. Calloway) who didn't die. He realizes that Herman owns a band with few of his band mates, Miss Thomas, Steady Eddie, and lots more. When he told Herman his mother's name (Angela Janet), Herman realizes that Angela is Herman's daughter-- which meant that Herman is Bud's grandfather. This was the most astonishing part for me. This story ends up by Herman's band mates giving Bud a saxaphone which sounded great and made him join the band.

My favourite part of this book was when Bud pouring a hot water at the bully boy, Todd Amos at his pajama pants to make it seem that he wet his pants when he was sleeping. It was quite funny and I almost laughed as I was reading this part. I felt very enjoyable that Bud did a nice revenge on Todd who hit him to death until he was bleeding. Well, I have another favourite part: It was when Bud and Herman realizes that they are a relative. I felt seriously surprised at this part and read it over and over because it was not what I expected.

I think this book is called Bud, not Buddy because when Bud was young, his mother told him to never let anyone call him Buddy because Buddy is a dog's name or a name that someone's going to use when they're being false-friendly. His mother named him bud because bud is a flower and a little fist of love waiting to unfold and be seen by the world.

I would give this book 10 out of 9 which means it's still a great book.

Woeful Second World War

I've just finished a book called 'Woeful Second World War'. It is writen by a author called Terry Deary. This book is one of the 'Horrible Histories' series. He has writeen many historic books like book about pirates, warriors, knights, egyptians, romans, vikings and lots more... This book is a nice book with a few comics inside.

This book doesn't really talk about what happened on the war but it usually talks about the relations of people and about one person's experience on the war. There are some cool quizzes on this book and I learned some stunning and astonishing facts on the quizzes. One of the example is: If you were late for work in a German factory, you could be sentenced to three months in prison. This book also talks cruelty on the war and about animals of the war. This book doesn't talk much of the timeline or the process of the war.

Something shocking to me at this book was that Italian solders fighting the Germans at the time of Russian winter had cardboard boots. But when they get frozen and couldn't take them off, the officer orderd the other soldiers to saw the legs off and put the legs on the ovens. I thought that was disgusting and cruel.

I thought this book was nice but i was a little disappointed that it didn't talk much about the process and the conclusion of the war. I would give this book a 3 stars out of 5.

Indian in the Cupboard

I finished reading a book called 'Indian in the Cupboard'. It is a fascinating book and I really loved it. This book was way better than I expected. After reading a few pages of the book, I thought I would get bored of this book but it was completely different from my expectations. I couldn't let the book go and I had to concentrate while reading this book. It was very enjoyable.

It's about a boy named Omri who got an toy Indian for his birthday present by his friend, Patick. His little brother, Gillion, gave him an cupboard with a key for his birthday while his other brother gave him a skateboard, what he really wanted. He didn't really think it the cupboard was
nice. He thought it was very boring... However, he put the toy Indian inside the cupboard and that night, he heard a noise from the cupboard... and the toy Indian became alive. His name was Little Bear. Patrick also makes a cowboy named Boone alive from Omri's cupboard. Little Bear became friends (finally, because they were enemies first) and went to school and risked theirselves because they wanted to keep the Indian thing a secret (and Patrick showed Little Bear to the headmaster). Finally at the end of the book, Omri buys Little Bear an girl Indian and makes the girl Indian alive. Little Bear wanted to have a marriage with her so he returned home, forever. That part was the saddest.

Well, my favourite part of the book is when he first realizes that the Indian became alive. I really never expected that these things would happen but it did!!! I also liked the part when Boone drew a fascinating picture on art class, and the teacher was astonished because there was a microspic drawing on Omri's paper. (Actually, she had to bring a magnifying glass to examine the drawing).

I think the author of this book, Lynne Reid Banks did a surprisingly amazing job of making the readers get into the book and describing all the words and using nice vocabulary. I think she is a great author and I really wanted to read the next 3 books of this series. (If it comes out).

P.S. I would definitely give 5 stars out of 5 on this book. I recommend every one to read this book. I bet they would enjoy it.
